Begin at the catchment, finish at discharge
Every roof section contributes water somewhere. A valley concentrates flow from two slopes. A long gutter run feeds one or more outlets. A downpipe connection restricts water even when the gutter above it is spotless.
Drawing a simple map of roof planes, valleys, gutters, outlets and downpipes is worth doing before any work is scoped. It does not need to calculate capacity. Its job is to prevent fragmented repair, where one rusted section gets replaced and the same symptom returns because nobody checked the outlet below it.
Valley
Debris, corrosion, open laps, staining or concentrated overflow. The question is whether the valley is sound and whether its endpoint discharges cleanly.
Gutter run
Sagging, ponding marks, rust, leaking joints, overflow lines. Cleaning, adjustment, local repair or replacement are four different answers.
Outlet or sump
Restriction, a poor seal, corrosion, or a connection that looks undersized. Is flow actually being transferred to the downpipe?
Downpipe and discharge
Joint leakage, slow flow, pooling at ground level. Increasing one outlet without considering where the water goes just moves the problem downstream.
What an overflow pattern reveals
Observe from a safe location and never climb during rain. Where the overflow begins, whether it runs along a length or spills at one point, and how fast it follows the start of heavy rain all narrow the cause.
Overflow along a whole length
Points toward capacity, a widespread blockage or a fall problem across the run rather than one local defect.
A spill at a single point
Points at that outlet, a low section holding water, or concentrated flow arriving from a valley just above it.
Water behind the gutter
A different investigation entirely. Roof edge detail, flashing or fascia route rather than the gutter itself being at fault.
Repeated pooling near a downpipe
Where the water goes after it leaves the roof, which is sometimes a ground drainage question rather than a roofing one.
Preparing before the rain, without working in danger
Debris is only one possible cause. Fall, outlet placement, joint condition, deformation, capacity, valley discharge and downpipe restriction can all contribute, and wind changes how water enters a gutter at all.
1. Map the route
Roof planes, valleys, gutters, outlets, downpipes and discharge. It takes ten minutes and it stops fragmented repair before it starts.
2. Document the pattern
Where overflow starts, whether it is a line or a point, and how quickly it follows heavy rain. From the ground, after the weather, never during it.
3. Separate maintenance from deterioration
An inspection should distinguish a blockage from a design, damage or capacity issue before any work is specified. They cost very different amounts.
4. Coordinate roof and ground drainage
If the downpipe discharges into something restricted, the roof work will not fix the symptom. Worth establishing which side of that line the problem sits on.
Gutter repair, replacement or cleaning
All three are legitimate. Choosing between them on evidence rather than on what is easiest to quote is the whole point of mapping the route first.
Cleaning
Right when the route is sound and the problem is accumulated material. It is also the cheapest thing that gets sold as a fix for problems it cannot solve.
Local repair
Right for a defined fault with sound material around it: a joint, a short damaged section, a corroded outlet. It has to be verified downstream afterwards.
Replacement of a run
Right where fall cannot be corrected within the existing run, deformation is widespread, or corrosion appears at several points along it.
Price the route, not the pieces

Comparing drainage quotes
Drainage is where fragmented quoting is most common, because the visibly bad part is rarely the whole story.
Was the whole route inspected?
Valley, gutter, outlet, downpipe and discharge. If only the rusted length is named, the cause may not be in the scope.
Is fall being checked or assumed?
Ponding marks tell you a great deal, and correcting fall is a different job from replacing material.
What happens downstream of the repair?
Verifying that flow actually transfers after the work should be part of the job, not an assumption.
Is it a blockage or a capacity issue?
These need completely different responses, and one gets sold as the other more often than it should.

Is it just blocked?
Sometimes, and when it is we will tell you and charge you for a clean. But debris is only one of several causes. Fall, outlet placement, joint condition, deformation, capacity and valley discharge all produce overflow that looks identical from the ground, so it is worth establishing which one you have before paying for the wrong fix.
Why does one section always overflow first?
Usually because the restriction is at or just downstream of it, or because a valley is delivering concentrated flow into that part of the run. Which of those it is decides whether you need a clean, an outlet repair or a fall correction, and they are very different jobs.
Should I clear the gutters before the wet season?
Yes, and it is one of the most worthwhile things you can do. Do the accessible parts safely from a properly footed ladder, and never during rain when surfaces are slippery and debris is moving. Where it is not safely reachable, leave it rather than improvising.
Water pools near the downpipe outlet. Is that yours to fix?
It depends where the restriction is. We assess the visible roof drainage components and will tell you plainly when the problem is below them, in the ground drainage, because that is a different trade. What we will not do is replace a gutter to fix a discharge problem.
Can you make the gutters bigger?
Sometimes capacity is genuinely the issue and a larger profile or an extra outlet is the answer. More often the existing run is adequate and something is restricting it. We would want to establish which before recommending a change, because upsizing one part can just move the constriction along.
How long does drainage work take?
A clean and a check is usually part of a day. A sectional repair is often the same visit. Replacing a full run with fall correction takes longer and needs settled weather. We give you a day count with the quote rather than after we start.
